President Bongbong Marcos headed a situation briefing in La Carlota City and here’s what he plans to do after this.
After the eruption that occurred last December 9, 2024, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has raised the status of Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island to Alert Level 3. In the past months, the active volcano has been displaying seismic activity and was on Alert Level 2 until December 9.
Kanlaon is straddling the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. Previously, at least 26 areas on Negros Island were affected.
Alert Level 3 or magmatic unrest means that a “magmatic eruption has begun that may progress to further explosive eruptions”.
In the recent update dated February 22, 2025, the PHIVOLCS recorded 14 volcanic earthquakes, emission of 1,857 tons of sulfur dioxide per day, 75 meters plume, and inflated edifice.
Recently, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. headed a situation briefing in La Carlota City in Negros Occidental. After seeing the situation in the area, he expressed his plan to establish a task force to be led by the Office of the Civil Defense to address the effects of the eruption of Kanlaon.
The plans include the relocation of the people living within the four to six-kilometer danger zone. It also includes the establishment of a permanent evacuation center and livelihood opportunities for the affected residents.
“Iyong usapan namin umabot hanggang sa relocation na para kahit na anong gawin ng Kanlaon mayroong pupuntahan ang tao. And they can continue to make a living, may hanapbuhay pa rin sila, tuloy-tuloy pa rin ‘yung kanilang ano,” he added.
He also assured that the government will be sending assistance to the affected people and will continue to come for the evacuees.
