Government Worker Arrested for Breaking Election Gun Ban in Cotabato

Police Authorities Arrest Government Worker During Checkpoint for Breaking Election Gun Ban

A government worker from Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Norte was arrested for reportedly breaking the election gun ban.

On January 12, 2025 (Sunday), a government worker was arrested at a checkpoint in Barangay Mother Tamontaca, Cotabato City, for violating the election gun ban during the first day of its implementation.

During a regular vehicle inspection, police spotted a CZ P-09 firearm inside the worker’s minivan. Without the proper documents to carry the firearm, plus the gun ban in full effect, the authorities had no choice but to take the individual into custody.

The suspect hasn’t made any statement about the incident so far. The police are looking into whether this case might be connected to any earlier incidents.

To keep the city secure during the election period, COMELEC and the police set up 11 fixed checkpoints and 14 mobile ones around Cotabato City. Given that the area is flagged as a “red category” due to security concerns, these checkpoints are part of stricter measures to avoid potential problems.

“Subject for investigation natin since wala naman po siyang naipakitang mga document, at in fact, bawal naman tayo talaga magdala sa panahon ngayon. Isa sa chine-check natin is kung meron ba siyang involvement sa mga previous incident,” PRO-BAR spokesperson Lt. Col. Jopy Ventura said.

Despite this arrest, the police shared that the first day of the gun ban was calm and orderly. The regional director even went around personally checking the checkpoints to make sure everything was running smoothly and by the book.

The election gun ban is a big part of keeping things safe and preventing any violence as voting day gets closer. Strict enforcement like this sends a clear message that security is a top priority during this period.
