Devotee Walks Barefoot for 7 Hours To Show His Devotion as Part of Traslacion 2025
TRASLACION 2025 – A Nazareno devotee earns praise online for walking barefoot for hours during ‘Pagpupugay’ to show his devotion.
In Manila, thousands of devotees gathered at Quirino Grandstand for the annual “Pagpupugay” as part of the Black Nazarene celebrations. Among them was Ramil, a 43-year-old from Carmona, Cavite, who stood barefoot for hours to show his devotion and honor the struggles of Jesus Christ.
Ramil, along with three friends, started the day at a 5:30 a.m. Mass in Quiapo Church. Afterward, they went straight to the Grandstand, where the image of the Black Nazarene was waiting for the faithful.
“Kumbaga dinadaos ko yung paghihirap ni Hesu Kristo, kaya sa ganitong paraan, ganito ko isi-share sa Kaniya na ako kaya ko ring magdusa ng ganoon para sa Kanya,” said Ramil.
The devotee got there at 7:30 a.m. and finally reached the image around 2:40 p.m. Despite the long wait, he saw it as a way to reflect and pray for guidance, protection, and good health for his family.
“Dasal ko ano, kumbaga sa hanap-buhay, gabay, ganoon. Lagi niya akong gabayan at yung pamilya ko, na sana hindi magkasakit,” he added.
This year, Ramil noticed that the crowd was much larger than before. The lines were slower, but the energy and faith of the people were unmistakable.
By mid-morning, more than 22,000 devotees had joined the event, a clear sign of how important the Feast of the Nazarene is to Filipinos.
The traditional “pahalik,” paused during the pandemic, is back this year. Devotees can now touch the image using towels or handkerchiefs, although organizers discouraged kissing it for health reasons.
The Feast of the Black Nazarene runs for ten days, starting on December 31 and culminating in the Traslacion on January 9. The massive procession will bring millions of devotees together, as the image is carried from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church.
