Engineering Students From STI College Ortigas-Cainta Created Smart Walking Stick for Visually Impaired Individuals
The engineering students from STI College Ortigas-Cainta have invented a unique walking stick equipped with GPS.
A group of Computer Engineering students from STI College Ortigas-Cainta has created a unique walking stick equipped with GPS, obstacle detection, and a bill identifier. The invention is designed to help visually impaired individuals, especially massage therapists, perform their daily tasks more easily.
The innovative walking stick was developed by four students: Harold Aldaba, John Patrick Mendros, Herault Aguirre, and John Christian Marquez. The inspiration came from the blind massage therapists in Antipolo, where some of the students live.
Despite their disabilities, these individuals work hard, motivating the group to create a tool that could help them navigate daily life with fewer challenges.
The walking stick has three main features. First, it has an obstacle detection sensor that provides real-time alerts if something blocks the path. This makes it easier and safer for users to move around without bumping into objects.
Second, it includes a GPS tracker that can be used by the families of the visually impaired to monitor their location, offering extra security and peace of mind. Lastly, the bill identifier can detect the value of money to avoid confusion and prevent scams, ensuring smoother and safer financial transactions.

The students carefully researched each part of the project to ensure the walking stick worked efficiently. They also conducted testing with blind massage therapists in Antipolo, who gave positive feedback and expressed excitement about how the tool could improve their day-to-day activities.
With its smart features, the walking stick offers a huge step forward in supporting the visually impaired. It combines innovation and compassion to help users gain more independence and confidence in their everyday lives.
