Ex-OFW in Trece Martires, Cavite Arrested After Applying for Police Clearance

An ex-OFW was arrested in Trece Martires, Cavite, after applying for a police clearance, only to discover she had an active warrant of arrest

According to authorities, the warrant was issued by the Biñan Regional Trial Court for a violation of BP 22, also known as the Bouncing Checks Law.

The former Pinay overseas Filipino worker (OFW) visited the police station on December 10, 2024 to secure a clearance for her job application. During the routine verification process, police personnel found the active warrant in the system, which is linked nationwide.

As a result, the warrant was immediately served, and she was taken into custody, according to Police ng Trece Martires chief Police Lieutenant Colonel Orlando Carag.

“She tried to acquire police clearance so ‘yung personnel natin siyempre titingnan nila sa system namin, nationwide ito eh. So nung nakita nila sa system na may active warrant of arrest, hindi na nila siya pinaalis, and ininform nila ‘yung warrant personnel ko so immediately sinerve na nila ‘yung warrant of arrest niya,” said Carag.

The woman, who previously worked as a domestic helper in Kuwait, said she was unaware of the warrant. She explained that the case came from a loan she took from a lending company in 2019 to support her canteen business.

Unfortunately, when the pandemic hit, her business suffered huge losses, and she was unable to repay the full amount. She shared that many of her customers stopped coming due to restrictions, leaving her without funds to cover her debts.

After working abroad for two years, she returned to the Philippines to find work as a factory worker, not anticipating that her case would appear during the clearance process.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has informed the Biñan Regional Trial Court about her arrest. Meanwhile, the woman is preparing to post a P24,000 bail in hopes of reuniting with her family in time for the Christmas season.
