SENIOR CITIZEN – A 63-year-old journalism student went viral online and earned praise after passing his final thesis defense.
Recently, the Facebook page “The Flame” shared photos of a senior citizen identified as Roberto Solis who passed his final thesis defense, bringing him closer to earning his long-awaited journalism degree.
Solis, a journalism student at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), proves that that it’s never too late to achieve your dreams.

On December 7, 2024, Solis presented his research titled “Fashion Journalism: An Analysis of Stories on the SONA Outfits from Aquino III to Marcos Jr. Administrations” at UST’s España campus.
It marked the final requirement for his thesis subject, and he successfully defended his work before his panel.
Solis first enrolled in UST’s journalism program in 1979. However, life had other plans. He had to pause his studies to focus on his career as a fur expert and fashion adviser. After retiring, Solis decided to return to UST in January 2024 to finally finish what he started decades ago.

The journalism student shared that his career and travels kept him fulfilled over the years, but completing his degree remained a goal he couldn’t let go of. Now that he has the time, he is determined to make it happen.
“I’ve been enjoying my life ever since in between jobs and traveling the world… But now that I’ve retired, I want to finish college,” he said.

His passion for fashion and journalism came together in his thesis, showing his expertise and commitment to his chosen field.
