John Lloyd Cruz talked about his new movie
A-list actor John Lloyd Cruz shared that this project was the way he met his girlfriend visual artist Isabel Santos.
John Lloyd has done a lot of movies throughout his years in the entertainment industry. In recent years, the actor opted to do unconventional roles, far from his leading man image in the mainstream.
In a recent interview, based on the article in The Philippine Star, John Lloyd was asked if he would return to doing movies with commercial appeal.
John Lloyd Cruz jokingly said, “Wala ba itong commercial appeal?” He was talking about his new movie Moneyslapper which is a dark comedy directed by Bor Ocampo.
This movie is part of the QCinema Film Festival. Previously, John Lloyd’s co-star Jasmine Curtis-Smith talked about working with the actor in this film.
JLC said that he has not stopped because they have been developing things for years now. It’s just that he does not want to preempt this.
“Talaga wala lang siguro, sila din yung mga ka-jamming ko. I wish I could tell you more. I don’t want to name names, but one project is already on its third draft, and we’ve been brainstorming on another for almost two years,” he said.
He said that this is probably the reason why his path is now on doing more serious films. John Lloyd said that the stage he has now would give him a harder time in making a film.
The actor also pointed out that the concept of mainstream has been changing. “You don’t know what’s mainstream now. When I watched ‘Past Lives,’ (naisip ko) yan ang pwede! That could be done,” he said.
John Lloyd Cruz also mentioned that he would receive questions asking him when he would do a mainstream project. He said that it was not his fault and that people should send their messages to writers.
“I’m not a writer; you should be sending messages like that to the writers. I’m just an actor standing in front of you,” the actor said in jest, playing with the lines from the movie Notting Hill.
JLC said that Moneyslapper is the first script he read after leaving ABS-CBN and just like the script of Servando Magdamag, he could not stop reading until he was finished.
Years after the conversations between him and Bor Ocampo, he felt the urge to do this film. He also revealed that if this project was not offered to him, he would have met his girlfriend Isabel Santos.
“If the offer didn’t happen, I wouldn’t know Isabel. I mean, kung hindi nangyari yun… struggle ‘di ba? It means a lot. But honestly, if the film offer didn’t happen, many other things would not happen. ‘Dun talaga nagsimula,” he shared.
