Grade 3 Student Fatally Hit by Motorcycle on His Way to School in Lapu-Lapu City
Grade 3 student reportedly lost his life after being hit by a motorcycle on his way to school in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
A road accident, also known as a traffic accident, happens when vehicles or pedestrians collide or encounter obstacles on the road, often leading to injuries, fatalities, or property damage.
These accidents can involve cars, motorcycles, bicycles, trucks, or pedestrians and can happen due to various factors, such as speeding, distracted driving, poor weather conditions, or faulty vehicle components.
On early Tuesday morning (November 12, 2024), a nine-year-old Grade 3 student on his way to school was fatally struck by a motorcycle while crossing Tiangue Road in Barangay Babag, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
The student was crossing to reach his school when the accident happened around 5:40 a.m. According to police, the impact from the collision was severe, throwing the young student to the pavement and causing serious head injuries.
The victim was immediately rushed to Lapu-Lapu City Hospital, but despite all efforts, he was pronounced dead around 8:30 a.m.
The 21-year-old motorcycle driver involved in the accident was reportedly on his way to get fuel. However, he suddenly swerved into the opposite lane, not only hitting the child but also crashing into another motorcycle, which injured two other people. It caused extra damage to both motorcycles involved.
As of this writing, the driver is held in police custody and faces charges, including reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. Police Lieutenant Colonel Christian Torres from the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office shared that discussions between the child’s family and the driver are ongoing, but no agreement has been made.
The incident reminds us of the importance of road safety, especially in areas near schools and pedestrian crossings. Authorities are urging motorists to be extra cautious and watchful to prevent such incidents from happening again.
