Utility Worker at Mall Dies After Falling Into Elevator Without Cabin
A utility worker at the mall died after falling into an elevator, and discovered that there was no elevator cabin.
On November 2, 2024 (Saturday), a 45-year-old janitorial leadman named Robin Esguerra lost his life after falling into an elevator without a cabin at SM City Baguio. The incident circulated online and elicited comments from the netizens.
Robin, who was from La Trinidad, worked for a cleaning crew at the mall. According to witnesses, he stepped into the service elevator area but didn’t notice that the elevator was on a different floor.
The mistake caused him to fall about 20 meters down the shaft. He got seriously hurt and was rushed to the hospital but sadly didn’t make it.
The mall quickly stepped in, providing emergency assistance and working with local authorities on the investigation. They’ve also been in touch with Robin’s family during this tough time. His passing is especially hard on his wife, who is eight months pregnant and was excited to welcome their first baby.
The accident has raised some important concerns about safety in public places like shopping malls. People in the community are wondering if the right safety measures were in place and what will be done to avoid similar accidents in the future.
While police have confirmed there’s no foul play, they are now looking into the elevator’s safety, checking if anything went wrong and if improvements are necessary.
As Robin’s family copes with their loss, everyone hopes the mall will be open about what happened and take steps to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.
Eventually, SM City Baguio issued a statement regarding the incident and expressed condolence to Esguerra’s family during this difficult time.
