Regine Velasquez shared funny stories about her childhood
Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez recalled her “pobre” but fun life when her family was living in Southern Leyte.
Regine is one of the OPM icons. Her achievements in the music and entertainment industry are because of her talent and hard work, accompanied by passion. The younger generation of artists considers her singing career as an inspiration.
It may come as a surprise for many people that Regine has Bisaya roots. She is the most recent guest of comedian-host Melai Cantiveros in her podcast Kuan On One.
Regine Velasquez said that she is not fluent now in Bisaya but she can’t be sold because she understands. She shared that her family lived in Hinundayan, Southern Leyte when she was 6 years old until she turned 10, and that was the time when they moved to Manila.
Melai Cantiveros shared that during breaktime when they were taping for their morning talk show Magandang Buhay, the Asia’s Songbird would mention their poor life in the province.
“Pobre kaayo, yung tipong walay ulam (Mairap talaga, yung tipong wala kaming ulam),” she said. This was their situation back then. She also recalled that they could not even afford to buy shampoo. Regine would just use the body soap on her hair.
“Sabon dito, sa lahat, Pareho lang. Malagkit,” she shared while gesturing putting soap on her arm and head. Regine also said that she did not know who Santa Claus was because of the poverty they had.
However, the singer said that living that kind of life brought her happiness. “What I remember of it is that it was fun,” she shared. Even though they had a difficult life back then, Regine said that her parents were good at shielding them from it.
She said that they would just realize they were poor when they would see their fellow kids have a certain popular toy at that time which they can’t afford. Behind that, as a kid Regine said that she was just thinking that life was great.
