Grandson Rigo of Rodrigo Duterte Files COC for Davao City Councilor
RODRIGO DUTERTE – The grandson of former president Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte, Rigo files a certificate of candidacy (COC) for city councilor.
Rodrigo “Rigo” Duterte II, the grandson and namesake of former President Rodrigo Duterte, is the latest member of the Duterte family to venture into politics. On Tuesday, Rigo filed his COC for councilor in Davao City’s first district, signaling the continuation of the family’s long-standing political influence in the region.
Rigo was accompanied by his father, Rep. Paolo Duterte, and his brother, Omar Duterte, who is the barangay captain of Buhangin, during the filing. The family’s support for Rigo’s candidacy under their political party, Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod (which translates to the “unity of the people of the city”), underscores their ongoing presence in Davao’s political landscape.
So far, Rigo is the first among his family members to officially file a COC for the upcoming elections. However, Paolo Duterte, who currently represents Davao City’s first congressional district, has yet to decide on his political future. The congressman mentioned that while his wife and children are encouraging him to return to private life, the ongoing political attacks against their family have made him hesitant to seek reelection. Paolo plans to discuss his options with his father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, and his sister, Vice President Sara Duterte, before making a final decision.
Earlier, Sara Duterte revealed that her brothers, Paolo and Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte, were both considering running for the Senate. This adds to the speculation surrounding the family’s potential roles in the 2025 midterm elections.
As the Duterte family contemplates their next moves, Rigo Duterte’s entry into local politics signals a new chapter in their political legacy, continuing their influence over Davao City. The upcoming elections will be a key moment for the family as they navigate the political landscape and determine their future roles in both local and national governance.
