The driver, Saman Chanput, escaped, and according to him, his initial response to escape was due to panic.
Trairong Phiwpan, head of the police forensic department, said 23 bodies were recovered from the bus, however, the bodies were badly burned it is giving them a hard time to identify them.
The driver surrendered Tuesday evening which was several hours already since the fire. He told the investigators that he was driving in a usual manner until the bus lost balance, hit another car, and crashed into a concrete highway barrier. The fire sparks from this event ignited the blaze that engulfed the whole bus and claimed the lives of many.
Based on the statements of the driver, he ran to get a fire extinguisher from another bus but it was not enough to put out the fire. He panicked and then, he ran away.
