“She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27 September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end,” the statement said.

Smith leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated over the loss of an “extraordinary mother and grandmother”. They thanked the people for their kind messages and support and asked for privacy as they go through this very difficult time.

About Smith

She was born in 1934 and grew up in Oxford. Her acting career began at the city’s Playhouse Theatre when she was just a teenager. It was in 1969 when she was cast in the lead role of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. This was about the Edinburgh schoolteacher who has an admiration for Mussolini.

She won the best actress Oscar in 1970. In the Harry Potter movies, she played the role of Professor Minerva McGonagall and she was the Dowager Countess in Downton Abbey.

She received multiple accolades, including two Oscars and five BAFTAs with her career extending across film, television, and stage. She was one of the loved and most-respected figures in British acting.

In 1990 Smith was knighted by Queen Elizabeth and became a Dame. In the United Kingdom, this is a title given to women that is equivalent to a knight.

To Harry Potter fans, this is another heartbreaking event. Professor McGonagall just joined others such as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Rubeus Hagrid, Vernon Dursley, Cornelius Fudge, Garrick Ollivander, and many more.
