Local Fisherman Ronnel Arambulo to Run for Senate in 2025 Elections
RONNEL ARAMBULO – The local fisherman makes rounds online after announcing his plan to run for the Senate in the 2025 elections.
The fisherfolk leader is set to run for the Senate in the 2025 elections with the Makabayan coalition. His campaign is picking up support from key groups like Amihan and the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP), who back his push for the rights of small-scale fishermen and the protection of the environment.
Arambulo comes from a humble background, growing up in a poor fishing family on Malakaban, Talim Island, in Binangonan, Rizal. His early life as a fisherman in Laguna de Bay has fueled his strong commitment to improving the lives of small-scale fishermen.
Since the mid-2000s, he has been actively involved in grassroots movements, including Anakbayan and PAMALAKAYA, advocating for the rights of marginalized communities.
His campaign focuses on several important issues. He opposes coastal reclamation projects and privatization efforts that he believes threaten the livelihoods of fishing communities. Arambulo is also critical of the Laguna Lakeshore Expressway and Dike Project, arguing that these initiatives could damage local ecosystems and disrupt communities.
Additionally, he advocates for the protection of Philippine sovereignty over its waters, especially in the West Philippine Sea, and supports comprehensive land reform and gender equality.
The local fisherman’s candidacy is receiving praise from leaders within the Makabayan coalition, who see him as a fresh alternative to the usual politicians. His campaign shows a change towards prioritizing the needs of ordinary Filipinos, especially those in fishing and farming sectors.
