A tired lion in Baluarte Zoo receiving strokes from caretakers caught the attention of Nadine Lustre and here’s what she said.

Animals belong to their natural habitat and the best thing people can do to them is to let them live peacefully.

Recently, a tired lion of the Baluarte Zoo, known as the Selfie Lion of the establishment, is trending online. This is after a video of him being receiving some strokes from his caretakers went viral online.

The lion was kicked, pulled in the tail, slapped on the face from his caretakers to wake him up while people take photos with him. The video circulated online people online began calling out Baluarte Zoo in Vigan for allegedly not treating their main star well.

Animal rights groups, such as the AKF and Strategic Power for Animal Respondents (SPAR) Philippines called out the zoo as the lion appeared uncomfortable and exhausted. The alleged mistreatment opened the window of the broader issue surrounding animals held in captivity.

In a post, Nadine Lustre’s attention was caught and she raised her concern about zoo animals being treated in inhumane ways just so they stay calm around people. According to her, they are made to take substances and physically threatened for him to behave in a certain way so people can take photos beside them.

“It’s heartbreaking because it strips of their natural behavior and well-being,” she said. The actress also revealed the reality of zoo business where they market animals in conservation but in reality, they are being kept in small areas that make them stressed and depressed.

Animals are exploited for entertainment for profit rather than letting them live in the wild with full freedom.
