Microsoft Outage Affected PH Companies, Underlying Cause Fixed

Several companies were affected following the global Microsoft outage. The underlying cause is now fixed.

MICROSOFT OUTAGE – The underlying cause for outage has been fixed already but this is how it impacted several PH companies.

Media, telecoms, banks, shipping companies, and flights were all affected in Philippines following the massive outage in Microsoft for its 365 apps and services. This incident led to disruption in services industries worldwide. Accordingly, this was caused by a “faulty update” from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike.

In Philippines, several companies reported that they got affected by this global outage.

Several banks were impacted. Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) stated that this massive outage affected their bank operations which may cause longer wait times in their branches and contact center.

BDO also reported technical difficulties because of the same reason. Apart from the extended waiting times, their digital channels will also suffer from delays and unavailability.

Metrobank also said there’s a slowdown or temporary unavailability to some of their bank products and services. The same situation also happened to UnionBank and RCBC.

ICT Assistant Secretary Renato Paraiso of the Department of Information and Communications Technology stated the outage is not due to hacking.

In airports, several airlines reported that their system were disrupted which included the scheduled flights and others. The disruption caused them technical issues resulting in delayed flights and longer lines at the airports.

As per an update, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said on platform X that the issue has been already “identified, isolated, and a fix has been deployed”. However, despite the fix, the residual impact of the cybersecurity outage still affects some customers.
