The fire destroyed Daisy’s ABC School and two houses in an adjacent compound belonging to the mayor’s family. According to PLt. Col. Nazer Canja, San Carlos police chief, the 58-year-old janitor admitted to starting the fire out of anger after learning he would be laid off from the school effective June 15.

The janitor, known as “alias Rec,” said he bought a gallon of gasoline and placed it next to a lit candle in the school stockroom.

According to the report, Canja noted that the janitor’s intention was solely to burn the school, not the mayor’s house. The janitor surrendered on Saturday, June 15, after allegedly being dismissed for not performing his duties and for being intoxicated and smoking on school grounds.

Mayor Gustilo mentioned that he was informed the janitor had been drinking and only intended to burn the school. He added that the janitor confessed after feeling guilty about the destruction of the mayor’s house.

Gustilo and his family are currently staying in his sister’s house while she is abroad.
