KANLAON VOLCANO ERUPTION – The highest peak in the Visayas erupted and here are the photos and videos circulating online.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) informed the people about the ongoing eruption at Kanlaon Volcano. As stated, the active volcano in the Visayas, the highest peak, is producing a 5000-meter plume.

Alert Level 1 prevails over Kanlaon Volcano or Low Level Unrest. This alert level indicates that there is a current disturbance but no eruption imminent.

In a bulletin issued at 8 pm, the “explosive eruption” occurred at 6:51 pm on Monday and lasted 6 minutes. This event has brought a “voluminous and incandescent plume that rapidly rose to 5,000 meters”.

Before the eruption, the agency observed a “relatively strong volcano-tectonic earthquake”.

Coarse ashfall and sulfurous odors in communities was also reported on the western slopes of the volcano.

Several snaps and videos of the volcano spewing ashes and other materials are circulating online. Users who uploaded these warned residents to stay alert and vigilant amid the ongoing eruption.

See the post below:

Last April, PHIVOLCS reported that there was an increase in the sulfur dioxide (S02) emission of the volcano. This year, an average of 1,300 tons per day emitted by Kanlaon has been recorded with a high average of 3,098 tons on January 19.

The public are advised by the experts to be vigilant and refrain from entering the 4-km. permanent danger zone.

Facebook user Precious Villajos Recaña uploaded photos and videos of the volcano with thunders being seen as it emits smoke and ashes.

Amid the sudden eruption, emergency siren alarm warning was also ordered in the Canlaon City, the host of the highest peak of the Visayas. This is based on the post of Kaizen’s ArmourHead Motovlog.

As per the NDRRMC record, Kanlaon erupted on 06:51 PM.

The volcano straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental covering 24,557.60 hectares consisting of rainforests and and thick vegetation. This is the third most active volcano in the Philippines.

The agency continues to closely monitor the activity of Kanlaon. As per an update, the alert level was raised to Alert Level 2 which means that “there is current unrest driven by shallow magmatic processes that could eventually lead to further explosive eruptions or even precede hazardous magmatic eruption”.
