Stroke Patient Earns Sympathy Online After Cooking ‘Lugaw’ for Demolition Team Set to Tear Down Their Homes
A female stroke patient cooks ‘Lugaw’ for a demolition team that was set to tear down their homes in Hinigaran.
The demolition of houses in squatter areas refers to the removal of informal settlements or dwellings that have been built on land without legal ownership or permission from authorities. These areas, often referred to as squatter settlements or informal settlements, are characterized by makeshift housing structures without legal documents.
The reasons for demolishing houses in squatter areas vary but often include urban development projects, land regularization efforts, public safety concerns, and environmental preservation initiatives.

Authorities may undertake demolition activities to reclaim land for planned developments such as roads, parks, schools, or commercial projects. In some cases, demolitions are carried out due to the unsafe or unsanitary conditions of the informal settlements, posing risks to residents’ health and safety.
Displaced residents may lose their homes, livelihoods, and access to essential services. Moreover, demolitions can lead to social unrest, protests, and conflicts between residents and authorities.
Around 9:00 in the morning on April 5, 2024 (Friday), an elderly woman took it upon herself to cook porridge for the demolition team tasked with tearing down their homes in Sitio Canggapas, Brgy. Anahaw, Hinigaran, Negros Occidental.
According to Imelda Santa Maria, a resident of the area, she cooked ‘lugaw’ for those who might feel hungry while working on the demolition. She added that they have been living in the area for quite some time, and she has been a stroke patient for four years now.
Imelda’s husband couldn’t work because he takes care of her. The stroke survivor’s touching gesture shows compassion of individuals even in challenging circumstances. Despite facing challenges, the community came together to extend kindness.
