- 3 cloves garlic, smashed
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided, or as needed
- ground black pepper to taste
- 4 potatoes, cut into wedges (Optional)
- 1 teaspoon fish sauce (Optional)
- ⅛ cup water (Optional)
The next part of the Bistek recipe is the cooking process. The cooking time may take around half an hour up to one (1) hour or a little bit more. Meanwhile, the great meal that awaits you is truly worth the waiting time. Here are the steps on how to cook this delicious beef dish:
Step 1
In a bowl, add the soy sauce, garlic, lime juice, fish sauce, sugar, and pepper. Make sure to mix them well and taste it to adjust to how you want it to be. Add the sliced beef and make sure that the meat is coated evenly. Marinate the beef for at least half an hour up to one (1) hour.
Step 2
Place a wok or pan over medium-high heat and heat one (1) tablespoon of oil. Fry the potatoes until the edges turn golden brown. It may take around seven (7) to ten (10) minutes of frying. Afterwards, transfer it into a plate.
Step 3
In the same pan, heat the remaining oil over medium-high heat. Fry the onions until they turn brown which may also take another seven (7) to ten (10) minutes. Transfer the onion in the same plate where you placed the fried potatoes.
Step 4
Heat the same pan over medium-high heat and fry the beef in batches. Keep the marinade aside. You can add more vegetable oil on the pan if needed. Wait until the beef turns brown in color and no longer pink in the center. This may take around five (5) to seven (7) minutes for each batch.
Step 5
Pour the reserved marinade into the pan. Add water to deglaze it and remove the brown bits from the bottom of the pan using a wooden spoon. Taste and adjust the seasonings based on your liking. Add the beef back to the pan along with some onions. Make sure to leave some sliced onions for the garnish. Reduce the heat and let it simmer until the sauce thickens.
Step 6
Transfer the beef and the sauce into your serving plate. Add the remaining onions as garnish. Put the potatoes on the side and serve. Enjoy your meal!
