Advisory on Phivolcs Tsunami Warning in the Philippines After Taiwan Earthquake

TSUNAMI WARNING – The Phivolcs issued an advisory about the expected tsunami waves in PH coastal areas following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan.

The Philippines is one of the countries that is frequently hit by an earthquake which is characterized by a sudden shaking of the ground due to the passage of seismic waves through Earth’s rocks. Such natural calamity can trigger another natural disaster — the tsunami.

Tsunamis characterized by giant waves due to earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea. It is not only the quakes within the Philippines which can result to tsunami warnings in the country. Preliminary earthquakes in other countries may also trigger tsunami warnings in the country and these natural incidents are monitored by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or more popularly called Phivolcs.

Recently, Phivolcs released a tsunami warning in the Philippines following a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan. The strong quake led to the collapse of several buildings in the city of Hualien on Taiwan’s eastern coast. It was the strongest quake to have hit the country since 1999.

The quake reportedly had a depth of 34.8 kilometers as per the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The Philippines’ seismology agency issued a tsunami warning following the strong earthquake in Taiwan citing the expected high tsunami waves in PH coastal areas this morning, April 3, 2024.

According to Phivolcs, citing the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center’s tsunami wave models and early tide gauge records of the natural calamity as the basis, the coastal areas in the Philippines are expected to experience high tsunami waves between 08:33 AM to 10:33 AM today for the first waves.

The Philippines’ seismology agency cited that the tsunami waves “may not be the largest and these waves may continue for hours”. For the people’s safety, Phivolcs strong advises the immediate evacuation to higher grounds of the people living in the coastal areas in the following provinces:

  • Batanes Group of Islands
  • Cagayan
  • Ilocos Norte
  • Isabela

The people are recommended to either move to higher grounds or farther inland. Phivolcs also advises owners of boats in harbors, shallow coastal areas, and estuaries of the above-mentioned provinces to secure their boats and move the vessels away from the waterfront.
