Father Shares Daughter’s Observation on ‘Alay-Lakad’ During Holy Week “why are all these people littering as they go about their sacrifice?”
A father has shared his child’s curious question regarding the “Alay-Lakad” observed by some believers during the recent Holy Week.
The “Alay-Lakad” is a form of devotion where devotees walk long distances, often towards churches or pilgrimage sites, as a sacrifice or thanksgiving to God for blessings received or as an act of repentance for their sins.
During most Alay-Lakad events, devotees walk barefoot, endure hardships, or carry crosses or pillars symbolizing their devotion and repentance. These walks usually occur from Maundy Thursday night to Good Friday, commemorating the suffering and death of Jesus Christ.
In some places, Alay-Lakad may also take place on other days of Holy Week.
Recently, Roland Cerera, a Facebook user, shared his daughter’s observation on “Alay-Lakad” during the Holy Week. The post immediately spread like a wildfire on social media and earns reactions from the netizens.
Cerera’s daughter asked him why the activity is called ‘Alay-Lakad?’. He responded “it means sacrifice by walking. We both agreed that if someone is to join the alay lakad, then their intention must be geared towards holiness, thus the sacrifice. And the original goal of this annual event is to reach the church of The Lady of Antipolo.“
The father didn’t expect the next question from his child. He mentioned that his child noticed the litter along the path “Then why are all these people littering as they go about their sacrifice?”
Roland’s daughter prompted him to express, “The world doesn’t make sense. Most people are selfish hipocrites. They hope and pray of reaching heaven yet are blind to their faults. It’s really sad how they cannot seem to connect discipline with reverence.”
