Drag Queen Pura Luka Vega Grows Stronger in Faith Amid Controversies
PURA LUKA VEGA – The faith of the drag queen in the Lord has grown stronger and deeper amidst the challenges she faces.
Pura Luka Vega or Amadeus Fernando Pagente in real life is known for her controversial performances and has been arrested twice due to multiple cases filed against her after mimicking the Black Nazarene in one of her drag acts.
Her latest arrest occurred on February 29, 2024, stemming from charges of disrespecting the Church and religion following her “Our Father” drag performance last year. Currently, she remains temporarily free after posting bail amounting to P360,000.
According to the drag queen, despite the criticisms she faces, she remains steadfast in her faith in the Divine Being. She continues to fight not only for herself but also for her family, friends, and her faith in God.
“Hindi naman nag-waver ang paniniwala ko sa Divine Being. It’s weird, but I think God has always been on our side, the side of the oppressed and the side of the LGBTQIA+ community. And that’s what matters. Thank you, Lord,” Pura said.
Pura Luka insists that her “Our Father” drag performance was not a sin. She views it as an expression of her queerness and her faith in the Lord.
“I stand firm to my beliefs that I did not do anything wrong. This is purely my expression of my queerness and my faith and there’s nothing wrong with that,” Pura emphasized.
She hopes that people will understand drag the way queer individuals perceive it – as a beautiful art form and not a crime. Pura believes that she will overcome this trial in her life.
On October 4, 2023, Pura was first arrested by the Manila Police District (MPD) due to charges related to her viral drag performance. She spent three nights in jail and was only released after posting bail amounting to P72,000.
