Guide on the SSS Death Benefit for the Beneficiaries of Deceased Members

SSS DEATH BENEFIT – This benefit offers gives members the peace of mind that their beneficiaries will not be left with nothing.

Undeniably, one of the things that scare a lot of people upon thinking about death is the life of the family they will leave behind. This usually happens in the case of breadwinners or the sole earners of their families.

This is where the advantage of being an active member of the Social Security System sets in. If you are a member of the state-run social insurance institution with an updated account, you may qualify to the SSS Death Benefit.

Under the Death Benefit offer of the Social Security System, the beneficiaries of an SSS member who has posted at least 36 monthly contributions prior to his/her death is entitled to either a monthly pension or a lump sum in the event of death of the member. Here are the primary beneficiaries of the member:

  • legal spouse until he/she remarries
  • legitimate, illegitimate, and legally adopted children of the deceased SSS member who are 21 years old and below, disabled, or cannot financially support themselves

In the absence of the primary beneficiary, the benefit may be granted to the living parents of the deceased SSS member whi are considered the secondary beneficiaries. The dependents may receive an SSS Death Pension or a Lump Sum.

If the deceased SSS member has posted at least 36 monthly contributions prior to the semester of his or her death, his/her beneficiaries will be entitled to an SSS Death Pension which is equivalent to the highest amount that may be yield by any of the following formulas:

  • 300 + (20% x AMSC) + (2% x AMSC) x (CYS – 10)
  • 40% x AMSC
  • minimum pension of Php 1,000 if CYS is below 10; Php 1,200 for 10 CYS; and Php 2,400 for 20 CYS

Aside from the pension, the beneficiaries of a deceased SSS member are entitled to receive a 13th Month Pension given every December and a Funeral Grant for anyone who paid for the burial expenses of the deceased member.

In case of members whose total monthly contributions posted prior to the semester of death are below 36 months, the beneficiaries of the deceased member may get a lump sum which is equivalent to the highest of any of the following:

  • Monthly Pension for every month of contribution paid to the SSS prior to the semester of death
  • 12 times of the monthly pension

In filing for an SSS Death Benefit claim, there are requirements that you need to prepare and submit to the Social Security System. Here are the documents required by the state-entity under the offer:

  • duly-accomplished SSS Death Claim Application (SSS DDR-1)
  • Death certificate of the member duly certified by PSA
  • Affidavit of the claimant or Filer’s Affidavit
  • Death certificate of the spouse duly certified by PSA (if the spouse is dead)
  • Death certificate of the member’s parent duly certified by PSA
  • Affidavit for Death Benefit Claim
  • Affidavit of Legal Heirs
  • Marriage Contract
  • Birth/Baptismal Certificate of dependent children
  • Birth/Baptismal Certificate of member
  • Birth/Baptismal Certificate of the minor beneficiary/ies
  • Medical Certificate of incapacitated child/spouse
  • Marriage Contract of the parents
  • Accident Report/Report of Death (SS Form BPN-105)
  • Guarantor’s Form (SS Form BPN-107)
  • Application for Guardianship (SS Form CLD-15)
  • Passbook /ATM card with a name or copy of validated deposit slip (original and photocopy) or Cash Card Enrollment Form, if pension
  • Recent residence certificate of the filer
  • Original and photocopy of claimant’s Social Security Card, Passport, PRC Card, Seaman’s Book, Driver’s License, or any two valid Ids, at least one with photo
  • latest 1 x 1 picture of the claimant

In case the member has not reached the 36 monthly contributions limit set by the SSS, the beneficiaries or anyone who paid for the burial expenses may apply for the SSS Funeral Benefit. This is also open to the beneficiaries of members who have posted 36 monthly contributions and more at the time of death.
