Push for Developing Mindanao Further Doesn’t Need Separating It from PH

PH Gov’t Can Boost Mindanao thru Countless Means

I humbly believe that if the pursuit is developing Mindanao, it does not have to go as far as separating it from the Philippines.

The Philippines is divided among three (3) huge regions such as Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Each has its own unique features and the seat of government is in Luzon, the biggest among the three. Undeniably, it is also the most progressive and it is followed by Visayas.

Truth be told that it has long been believed that Mindanao has the least access to a lot of things because of certain situations. It is not as peaceful as Luzon and Visayas and the government has long been under the pursuit of ending the armed-conflict in the region.

In 2016, former Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte seated as the President of the country following a landslide win the presidential election. It marked the reign of the very first Mindanaoan president in the Philippines.

Recently, former Pres. Duterte raised the idea of separating Mindanao from the rest of the Philippines to further the development in the island. According to the former President, he asked Representative Pantaleon Alvarez to gather signatures for their call for the separation of Mindanao from the rest of the country.

The said statement gathered different reactions. It is my humble opinion that there is no need for Mindanao to be separated from the Philippines if the pursuit is to better the region. The government can surely do it, or is doing it, without seceding the region.

Such proposal can really ignite a lot of questions like who would rule the region? Will the laws upheld in the Philippines still weigh more than whatever rules that will be specifically set for the region in case it happens?

While the said questions may be answered by the proponents or supporters of the proposal, I believe that pushing through with it may not be respectful on the part of the administration whether or not it will be allowed.

Some Mindanaoans may not be impressed by how well, or not, the current administration is doing for the development in their region. However, this still boils down to the fact that the current administration is the choice of the populace which we all are bound to accept and adhere to regardless of who we supported during the last election.
