Davao City Submerged in Floodwater Due to Heavy Rain Resulting to Suspension of Classes

Heavy rain causes flooding in Davao City prompting several government units to declare class suspensions in some areas.

On Tuesday (January 16, 2024), Davao City is experiencing flooding due to continuous heavy rainfall. Classes have been suspended in certain areas due to the inclement weather caused by thunderstorms and a shear line.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration reported that Davao City is experiencing cloudy skies with scattered light rain showers over the past few days.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) issued an Orange Rainfall Warning for Davao Oriental and Davao de Oro indicating possible flash floods and landslides due to heavy rains.

Davao City Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte declared the cancellation of classes in the affected areas. The announcement was made to ensure the safety of both school personnel and students.

Work-From-Home (WFH) arrangement shall be adopted in all national and local government offices, including government-owned and controlled corporations in Davao City.

CDRRMO is currently monitoring Bunawan River along Brgy. Bunawan Proper River, which is at a critical level. Talomo River along Brgy. Tugbok Proper River channel and Davao River are now at code yellow.

The remaining river channels in the area are being monitored at safe or normal levels. Meanwhile, calm seas are expected in the area.

According to the American Meteorological Society (AMS), the shear line is a linear region where there is a sudden change in the wind direction caused by the convergence of two winds originating from different directions. Shear line is associated with rainy weather during the northeast monsoon season.
