MANILA, PHILIPPINES – A police officer who discharged his firearm inside a bar in Quezon City has been officially removed from his position.

The use of guns by police officers is an important part of law enforcement that aims to keep the public safe. When police officers use their guns inappropriately or engage in inappropriate behavior, the consequences can be serious.

When police shoot their firearm outside the bounds of the law, it may result in serious legal consequences. Depending on the circumstances of the incident, this could include criminal charges ranging from assault to murder or even homicide.

Recently, a cop identified as Lt. Col. Mark Julio Abong was dismissed from his post following the issuance and implementation of a dismissal order by the Philippine National Police (PNP). According to PNP Chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda, Jr., the dismissal order was served on December 18, 2024.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government executed the dismissal order and NAPOLCOM rejected Abong’s appeal related to a “hit and run” incident he was involved in the previous year.

This incident resulted in the tragic death of a tricycle driver who was struck by Abong and injuries to the passenger, with attempts to cover up the incident.

PNP Chief Acorda explained that any police officer dismissed from service would not be entitled to receive any benefits.

Well as of this date nai-serve na sa kanya yung dismissal order. I already signed the dismissal order… The decision is executory, meaning while he may render his appeal or submit his appeal, the decision should stand,” Acorda explained.

PNP-FEO also canceled the License to Own and Possess Firearms (LTOPF) and registration of three firearms owned by Abong, as their licenses had already expired.
