Mang Nanie, Kind Senior Citizen Transformed His Home Into Free Library
HOME LIBRARY – A senior citizen named Hernando Guanlao turned his own home in Barangay La Paz, Makati City into a library.
Hernando Guanlao, known as “Mang Nanie” turned his house on Balagtas Street into a library. The books find shelter under his foliage, inviting visitors to explore the treasures within custom-made shelves.
The makeshift library contains thousands of books that are offered freely, and there are no rules, visitors can borrow or own as many books as they please.
The 72-year-old accountant by profession started the extraordinary library venture in 2000. Starting with just 50 books found in his cabinet, he named his project Reading Club 2000 as he shared his love for books.
Despite facing financial challenges at the time, he believed that books have a “healthy” life when open fueled his determination.
The library lacks a formal catalog, yet it remains a busy hub for students and professionals. His wife supported his decision to establish the community library. Unfortunately, he passed away a year ago due to a stroke.
Mang Nanie’s commitment to community service extends beyond his library walls. He distributes books to street kids and travels as far as Laguna to share the joy of reading.
The impact of his library has reached distant communities, from Laoag to Jolo, showing the far-reaching influence of this humble initiative.
Despite facing financial hardships in the past, Mang Nanie remains dedicated to serving humanity. He organizes feeding programs for kids in Makati and neighboring cities, emphasizing that service brings its rewards.
Over the past 23 years, Mang Nanie’s mission in community service has not only survived but grown.
“The more you give, the more it’s rewarded a thousandfold. That’s why I’m still here, Serve humanity, serve as much as possible. Not until it hurts but until it feels good.” Guanlao said.
