Jo Koy Explains His Controversial Taylor Swift Joke At Golden Globes

Jo Koy acknowledged the negative reactions to what he said at the Golden Globes Awards

Filipino-American comedian Jo Koy explained his controversial joke about pop star Taylor Swift at the 81st Golden Globe Awards ceremony.

Jo has brought pride to many Filipino people for showcasing the culture of the Philippines to the whole world. In his shows, he proudly shares his roots. Most of his jokes are about her Filipina mom and their family.

In one of his Netflix specials, he even featured the Philippines and some Filipino artists like Inigo Pascual. His movie Easter Sunday was also about a Filipino family.

However, after his Golden Globes hosting stint, even Filipinos criticized him for telling untasteful jokes, including the one he had featuring Taylor Swift and the National Football League (NFL).

“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” Jo Koy said.

Taylor was obviously unimpressed by this. She was seen showing a straight face as she pursed her lips and sipped her drink after that joke from the Fil-Am comedian. This was criticized on social media. Netizens bashed Jo and how he delivered his jokes.

Based on the article in Philstar, the Fil-Am comedian acknowledged the criticisms thrown at his hosting stint and he realized that this job is not easy. However, he pointed out that he enjoyed his first awards night hosting stint.

It’s a tough room. It was a hard job. I hit a moment there where I was like, ‘Ah.’ Hosting is just a tough gig. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but I got to still say I loved what I did,” he said.

Jo shared that he was informed to do this job 10 days prior to the event. That was the span of time that was given to him and his team to write his monologue.

He also explained that the Taylor Swift joke was intended mainly for NFL and not for the singer-songiter. “But it was more on the NFL,” he said. “I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that. So it was more of a jab toward the NFL. But it just didn’t come out that way,” Jo Koy explained.
