Quiapo Church Issues Guidelines for Upcoming Traslacion 2024

Quiapo Church issued reminders for devotees including the do’s and don’ts for the upcoming Traslacion 2024.

Traslacion is a significant religious event in the Philippines, particularly celebrated in Manila. It is an annual procession that honors the Black Nazarene, a popular religious icon known for its dark complexion and miraculous stories

Traslacion comes from the Spanish word “trasladar,” which means to transfer. It refers to the grand procession that transfers the Black Nazarene from its home in Quiapo Church to various routes around Manila.

Devotees believe it has miraculous powers and can grant healing and protection. Every year on January 9th, thousands of people gather to join the procession and express their faith.

Throughout Traslacion, devotees engage in symbolic acts of devotion. Some carry replicas of the Black Nazarene, while others join the “Pahalik,” where people line up to kiss or touch the image as a gesture of respect and seeking blessings.

On Wednesday (January 3, 2023), Quiapo Church gives reminders to Filipino devotees for the upcoming Traslacion on January 9, 2024. The Church reminded the public to strictly observe the protocols.

Here are the guidelines for Traslacion 2024:

Do’s

  • Devotees should eat before the commencement of Traslacion so that they have enough energy to participate in the procession.
  • Devotees can still toss their handkerchiefs and towels at the Black Nazarene picture at Quaipo Church.
  • To guarantee their safety, it is advisable that sick people and children simply stay on the side of the road.
  • Pulling the rope and carrying the pingga or lever are also permitted, but they should be done in a polite and cautious manner.

Don’ts

  • To avoid spoiling the view of the Black Nazarene figure, organizers prevented worshipers from climbing the andas or the carriage.
  • Devotees are discouraged from pushing each other to avoid injuries during the procession.
  • Quiapo Church also asked devotees not to bring large luggage or valuables. They are encouraged to use transparent bags for easy inspection.

Backpacks and water bottles are prohibited except for transparent ones. The authorities will implement physical distancing during masses.
