In the Philippines, one of the government agencies that women can turn to for financial assistance in times of pregnancy or childbirth is the Social Security System. More popularly called SSS, it is one of the state-run social insurance institutions in the country. In fact, one of the biggest of its kind.
There are millions of members of the Social Security System in the Philippines. Most of the member populace are locally-employed individuals in the private sector and self-employed individuals.
To maintain an updated membership to the SSS, a member must regularly post monthly contributions. An updated account can qualify a member to the loans and benefits offered by the state-run social insurance institution.
One of the benefits offered by the Social Security System is the SSS Maternity Benefit. It was crafted as an assistance to female members during times of pregnancy, childbirth, and miscarriage. To qualify, the member must meet the following criteria set by the state-run social insurance institution:
- has paid at least three (3) months of contributions within the 12-month period immediately before the semester of her childbirth or miscarriage
- If employed, the SSS member must have notified the SSS about her pregnancy through her employer immediately before the semester of pregnancy
- If self-employed, separated from employment, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW), or a voluntary member, the member must have directly notified the SSS about her pregnancy
If you are locally-employed, you must have informed the SSS through your employer as early as 60 days since the conception. If you are self-employed, a voluntary member, or an overseas Filipino worker (OFW), you must inform the SSS directly.
