Filipino para swimmer Ernie Gawilan wins the first gold for the Philippines in Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.

Gawilan put on an impressive display to secure the Philippines’ inaugural gold medal at the 4th Asian Para Games. He emerged victorious in the men’s 400m freestyle-S7, registering a time of 4:58.29 at the Hangzhou Olympic Center Aquatic Arena.

Gawilan outpaced Singapore’s Toh Wei Soong, who completed the race in 5:12.16, securing second place. China’s Huang Xianquan rounded out the top three, clocking a time of 5:16.63, based on the report of ABS-CBN News.

This represents Gawilan’s second medal at the Para Games, having previously claimed a bronze in the men’s 200m IM -SM7 on Monday, an event he dominated in 2018 in Jakarta. Gawilan already holds the Asian Para Games record in the 400m freestyle-S7 event, recording a time of 4:51 in Jakarta in 2018.

Gawilan, 32, aims to add another gold medal in the men’s 100-meter backstroke on the final day of the 4th Asian Para Games swimming championships on Thursday.
