Asian Games Gold Remains in Gilas Pilipinas Despite Justin Brownlee Failed Doping Test
The 19th Asian Games gold of the Philippine basketball team Gilas Pilipinas remains after player Justin Brownlee failed doping test.
Naturalized Filipino Justin Brownlee’s positive doping test had no effect on the country’s success in the men’s basketball competition at the Hangzhou 19th Asian Games. Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino confirmed that “the gold remains with us.”
Tolentino explained that the only situation in which the Philippines could lose the gold medal is if two more of Brownlee’s Gilas Pilipinas teammates also test positive. This is in accordance with Article 11.2 of the Anti-Doping Rule of the International Olympic Committee, based on the report of Philstar.
The CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) Anti-Doping Division could impose various sanctions on the team, including the loss of points, disqualification from a competition or event, or other penalties, in addition to any consequences for individual athletes who violate anti-doping rules.
Brownlee is the second athlete in Team Philippines to have a positive A sample in doping tests during the Hangzhou Games. Mountain bike cyclist Ariana Evangelista also failed a doping test at the Asian Games.
Both Brownlee and Evangelista have been provisionally suspended until the results of their B samples are assessed as part of their defense. Brownlee has until October 19 to contest the results of his A sample through the procedures established by the IOC, ITA, and the World Anti-Doping Agency.
