Pinay Jiu-jitsu Fighter Wins Second Gold Medal for PH in Asian Games 2023
Pinay Jiu-jitsu fighter bagged the second gold medal for the Philippines in the 19th Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China.
Despite battling a high fever for the past three days and entering her opening bout with a sense of hopelessness, two-time World champion Margarita ‘Meggie’ Ochoa clinched the Philippines’ second gold medal. She emerged victorious in the women’s under-48kgs finals by defeating fellow double World titlist Balqees Abdulkareem Adboh Abdulla from the United Arab Emirates.
Standing at 5 feet tall and a gold medalist at the 2019 SEA Games, Ochoa outlasted the 19-year-old grappler by securing a point advantage, based on the report. This victory allowed her to bounce back from a previous loss to former 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games titlist and American-Cambodian jiu-jitsu artist Jessa Khan in the heavier women’s under-52kgs category.
Additionally, the 33-year-old black belt holder surpassed her previous bronze medal achievement from the Indonesia meet five years ago. Ochoa made a strong start to her campaign at the Hangzhou Games by defeating Mongolia’s Odgerel Batbayar in the round-of-16, followed by another submission victory against Kazakhstan’s Nazgul Rakhayeva in the quarterfinals.
She secured her spot in the semifinals by overcoming Thailand’s Pechrada Kacie Tan, who was her teammate. Ochoa also managed to prevail over teammate Jollirine Co, who did not advance past the preliminaries against Tan, with a score of 4-2.
Marking a remarkable achievement, she holds titles in various international competitions, including the SEA Games, AIMAG, Asian Games, Continental Championship, and World Championships, making her a World No. 3 ATOS grappler.
