DSWD Warehouse for Relief Goods Flagged “Dirty” with Cockroaches — What If COA Didn’t Inspect the Place?

COA Flagged DSWD Warehouse for Relief Goods for Having Rodents, Cockroaches

Government agencies must ensure the cleanliness of their facilities even without inspections for everyone’s safety.

Cleanliness is one thing that the Department of Health (DOH) often reminds the people about for their health and safety. However, it seems like a facility of another government agency has looked past the reminders of the health department.

Recently, the Commission on Audit, more popularly called COA, flagged the warehouse of the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Metro Manila Field Office in Pasay City for having “rodents and cockroaches”. Unfortunately, the said warehouse is a facility that is used for the storage of relief goods.

According to COA, the filth in the DSWD warehouse caused the spoilage of some relief goods. The said foods could supposedly help the Filipinos in times of needs. However, with what happened to the relief goods, in case where they were distributed, they could have made a much worse impact than hunger.

The DSWD already gave a heads up that the said dirty facility will be personally checked by their field officer. The government agency also assured that the needed changes for the improvement of the cleanliness and stockpiling of the warehouse will be immediately implemented.

I believe that such situation could have been avoided. It is important that the government agencies take the lead in instilling the value of cleanliness to the people and making sure that the surroundings is safe and healthy for everyone.

The people may not aware where the foods given to them were stored but the possible effects can put lives at risk. Thus, while it is easy to pledge for the solution, a much better service must be done the next time around. What if COA did not inspect the warehouse?
