Carlo Paalam Ends Asiad Medal Bid Following Loss to Uzbek World Champ

Carlo Paalam bids farewell to his chances of winning a medal at the Asiad following his loss to an Uzbek world champion opponent.

Olympic silver medalist Carlo Paalam was unable to secure a medal for the Philippines at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. He suffered a defeat at the hands of Uzbekistan’s reigning world champion, Abdumalik Khalokov.

Carlo Paalam Asiad Loss

Paalam lost via a unanimous decision in their men’s 57kg quarterfinal bout on Tuesday night. Despite Paalam’s strong start in the 19th Asian Games boxing competition, Khalokov’s height and agility presented a formidable challenge for Paalam.

Exploiting his height advantage fully, Khalokov emerged victorious after accumulating enough points early in the match. Khalokov showcased his skills with fancy moves and lived up to his reputation as a world champion.

Paalam accepted the loss gracefully, stating, “I have no regrets because I gave my all.” He added, “You saw that we both used our intelligence because he is a world champion. I’ll bounce back in my next fight.”

Based on the report of Inquirer, Khalokov will face China’s Lyu Ping in the semifinals. Olympic bronze medalist Eumir Marcial is the Philippines’ remaining hope for a boxing medal.

Marcial, who has achieved four wins as a professional boxer in the US since the Olympics, aims to secure a spot in the finals against Syria’s Ahmad Ghousoon. He is set to compete in the gold medal match for the men’s 80kg category on Wednesday, October 4.
