Carlo Paalam Off to Strong Start in Boxing in Asian Games Campaign
Filipino boxer Carlo Paalam starts Asian Games campaign with an impressive performance in his boxing match.
Carlo Paalam made a strong start in the 19th Asian Games boxing competition by defeating Jordan’s Mohammad Abu Jajeh at the Hangzhou Gymnasium on Tuesday. The 2020+1 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist displayed clever evasion tactics against his significantly taller opponent and delivered precise punches that made a difference in his opening match.
Paalam secured his initial victory in the men’s featherweight division under 57 kilograms. The Filipino boxer received unanimous approval from the judges, winning with a score of 5-0 after three rounds.
Judges Piroska Boglarka DR Beki, Ivan Tsvetanov Popov, Valetintin Emanuel Ferreira, Manuel Vilarino, and Filip Bartlomiej Stefanski all favored the two-time Southeast Asian Games champion, with scores of 30-27.
Hailing from Talakag, Bukidnon, the 25-year-old Paalam remained unfazed by his taller adversary, patiently waiting for opportunities to land his punches. Based on the article of ABS-CBN News, he maintained an aggressive stance, closely tracking the movements of the Jordanian boxer.
Paalam effectively avoided his opponent’s reach advantage on multiple occasions to execute counterattacks. This marked the first time the 5-foot-4 boxer competed in a higher weight class, having gradually moved up to the bantamweight division at the 2022 Asian Championships in Amman, Jordan, and the 2023 Phnom Penh SEA Games in Cambodia, where he clinched gold medals.
Paalam utilized his agility and speed to target his opponent’s midsection and face, aiming to surpass the achievements of the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang bronze medalist in the 49-kilogram category. In the final round, Paalam skillfully evaded Abu’s aggressive attempts to secure a knockout, as the Jordanian fighter sought to overcome his deficit.
