Serbia Player Borisa Simanic Loses Kidney After Getting Elbow at FIBA World Cup
Serbia Player Borisa Simanic loses a kidney after getting an elbow during fight against South Sudan in FIBA World Cup 2023.
The Serbian basketball player, Borisa Simanic, suffered a kidney injury during the FIBA World Cup 2023 match against South Sudan, resulting in the removal of his kidney. The Serbian Basketball Federation announced this unfortunate news.
Simanic required kidney removal following an injury received during their group stage game against South Sudan. According to the report, Simanic underwent surgery twice in the Philippines.
Simanic was injured with less than two minutes remaining in Serbia’s victory over South Sudan on Wednesday, August 30. South Sudan’s Nuni Omot attempted to score under the basket but was blocked by Simanic.
Simanic, 25, shouted in agony and collapsed to his knees. Simanic subbed out seconds later, clearly in discomfort, and has not played for the Orlovi since. There were allegedly additional problems following the first operation, necessitating a second procedure on Sunday to remove his kidney.
“Due to changes in the vitality of the kidney tissue, we had to remove his entire kidney by surgical procedure,” said team doctor Dragan Radovanovic in a statement based on the article of ABS-CBN news.
“We expect and wish that after this surgical procedure, the post-operative flow will run smoothly.”
Omot has already apologized to Serbia and Simanic, claiming that he is not a dirty player after his turnaround post-move inside the basket resulted in an unintentional elbow hit on Simanic.
“My apologies, I didn’t mean to make any type of dirty play. I hope you have a speedy recovery. I’ll pray for you, and you’ll be in my prayers,” said Omot.
“I’m not a dirty player, I’ve never been a dirty player. From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely apologize to everyone who’s watching and to the player, especially,” he added.
