Police Arrests Tricycle Driver in Buy-Bust Operation, Suspect Returns to Jail Following Previous Conviction for Illegal Drugs

A tricycle driver returned to jail after he was arrested in a buy-bust operation in Barangay Old Balara, Quezon City.

The Philippines has been struggling with a difficult issue: the illegal drug trade. It’s a complex issue that impacts many various aspects of society, from law enforcement and public health to economics and human rights.

The illegal drug trade not only fuels crime but also hampers economic development. It contributes to corruption, reduces productivity, and diverts resources away from critical sectors.

The Philippines’ battle with illegal drugs is not isolated. Because drug trafficking knows no borders, it is a global concern that demands international cooperation. Sharing information, skills, and resources can result in more effective countermeasures.

On Friday evening (August 25, 2023), the operatives from the Quezon City Police District Station 6 launched a buy-bust operation along Commonwealth Avenue in Barangay Old Balara, Quezon City leading to the arrest of a 49-year-old tricycle driver.

According to Police Major Kenneth Leaño, Deputy Commander of Batasan Police Station 6, they received information from local residents regarding the suspect’s alleged illegal drug selling activities in the area.

The accused was found in possession of approximately 50 grams of suspected illegal drugs, valued at around P340,000. Leaño further disclosed that based on their records, the suspect had a previous stint in jail due to involvement in proliferation of illegal drugs.

“Nahuli siya dati sa Payatas at nakulong din dito sa station 6. Noong 2003 nagbuno siya ng 13 years sa kulungan and nito nga bumalik na naman siya sa pagbebenta ng shabu,” Police Major Leaño explained.

The suspect refrained from giving a statement on the allegations; “Wala po ako masasabi. No comment na po ako dyan sir.”

The tricycle driver suspect is set to face charges for violating Section 5 of Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.
