Over 50 Persons Deprived of Liberty Graduate From Elementary Thru ALS

More than 50 Persons Deprived of Liberty have graduated from elementary school graduation through the Alternative Learning System.

Within the walls of correctional facilities, a remarkable journey of learning, resilience, and transformation is unfolding. PDLs engage in education, rehabilitation, and self-improvement programs that are reshaping their lives and the perception of the correctional system.

Behind every PDL lies a story that led them to their current circumstances. While acknowledging their actions, it’s important to recognize that many PDLs aspire to change, grow, and reintegrate into society as responsible individuals.

On August 23, 2023 (Wednesday), Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna commended the 54 female PDLs who graduated from elementary. The inmates with age ranging from 19 to 56 years old happily attend the commencement exercises.

The city official recognized the challenges that inmates have faced and commended them for being dedicated to complete their primary education.

Gusto ko kayo batiin. Talagang natutuwa ako. Bagamat nandito kayo sa loob ng city jail, may pangarap pa rin kayo at alam ko kapag nabigyan kayo ng pagkakataon, ang pangarap na ito ay maipapamahagi niyo sa pamilya niyo,” Lacuna said.

Manila City Jail Female Dormitory Warden Jail Superintendent Maria Lourdes P. Pacion attended the graduation ceremony. She points out the collaborative effort between the city and the correctional facility to provide education and empowerment.

Ms. Lea V. Faa, Division ALS Focal Person, Dr. Angelita P. Cornejo, Officer-in-Charge, Assistant School Division Superintendent, and JCSupt. Clint Russel A. Tangeres, Regional Director of the Jail Bureau, NCR attended the event.
