Cagayan de Oro City Council Declares Pura Luka Vega as Persona Non-Grata

Filipino drag artist Pura Luka Vega has been declared persona non grata by the Cagayan de Oro City council.

A few weeks ago, Pura Luka became the headline of several local news outlets and social media pages for participating in a viral video where they partied in a remix version of ‘Ama Namin’ along with other LGBTQ+ members.

The drag queen received negative reactions from social media users who found his performance blasphemous and offensive. Some politicians called their actions an abuse of freedom of expression.

On Monday (August 14, 2023), Amadeus Fernando Pagente, popularly known as Pura Luka and a former contestant of “Drag Den Philippines,” was declared persona non grata in Cagayan de Oro.

The Sangguniang Panglungsod of Cagayan de Oro approved Resolution 2023-478, authored by Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya. The politician described the drag artist’s performance as “distasteful behavior.”

The city council approved the resolution against Pagente for allegedly mocking and disrespecting the Christian faith by dancing to a remix of ‘Ama Namin’ while portraying themselves as the Black Nazarene.

Last week, Apollo Quiboloy suggests extreme action vs Pura Luka “dapat ipako natin siya”

The resolution reads, “Serious disrespect and mockery of the Christian faith by portraying himself as the Black Nazarene dancing the remixed version of the Catholic song ‘Ama Namin’ (Our Father) in a recent viral video.”

Nacaya expressed his disappointment after Vega remained unapologetic.

In a previous report, City of Manila declares Pura Luka as persona non grata

“You are violating a law. You are offending the faithful’s feelings. For a Christian nation, you are not a person with dignity,” Nacaya said.

Vice Mayor Jocelyn Rodriguez added “It is very clear. This is a mockery of our belief. We teach our children to pray. Part of our upbringing for our children is to know God. This is a mockery of what we believe in.”
