The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) confirmed that former news anchor/reporter Jay Sonza was detained due to this case against him.
On Tuesday, August 15, the online community talked about Sonza who they say was in jail for an alleged illegal recruitment case. It was also said that there was already a mugshot that surfaced online.
After Sonza became a trending topic on social media, ABS-CBN reporter Nico Baua gave an update about this issue.
In his series of posts on X (Twitter), Baua said that NBI confirmed that Jay Sonza was indeed detained and arrested by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) and this happened two weeks ago.
Sonza was about to board a flight to Hong Kong but when he was interviewed by immigration officials, it was found out that there was a pending estafa case against him. With this, he was prevented to leave the country.
He was temporarily detained by the BI when an active warrant for syndicated and large-scale illegal recruitment was found against him. From BI, he was transferred to NBI’s custody.
Eventually, Sonza was transferred to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP). Ricarte said that the former news anchor/reporter was already in touch with his lawyer when he was still in the custody of BI.
In a video that was posted by ABS-CBN reporter Zyanne Ambrosio, BJMP Spokesperson Jayrex Bustinera said that indeed Jay Sonza is currently in the Quezon City Jail quarantine facility in Payatas.
“Ikinomit po siya sa pangalang Jose Y. Sonza ng RTC Branch 100 Quezon City,” Bustinera said.
