SIM Card Deactivation Is “Discrimination” – Group

A group against SIM card deactivation said that this is a form of discrimination

SIM Card Deactivation – Junk SIM Registration Network continues to push that the SIM Registration Act is discriminatory to the “marginalized.”

After the 90-day SIM card registration extension, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) stated that there will be no extension anymore. It was ordered that by July 25, unregistered SIM cards will be deactivated but a 5-day grace period will be given to users. This means that they still have the chance to reactivate their SIM cards until July 31.

In line with this recent update on development in the implementation of the SIM Registration Act, Junk SIM Registration Network spokesperson Maded Batara III said that this will put the consumers at risk and it is a form of discrimination, based on the report from The Philippine Star.

Batara said that SIM Card deactivation will simply give inconvenience to people. “The DICT is quick to label these unregistered SIMs as inactive, but the truth is we have no way of knowing what vital services deactivation is cutting these SIM users from. This is the legacy of SIM registration: discrimination upon those already marginalized,” the group’s spokesperson said.

If users will choose to stay unregistered until July 31, this means that their SIM cards will no longer receive disaster alerts. They will be able to use financial and social services.

Back in April, Batara’s group already pleaded with the Supreme Court to issue a temporary restraining order to the implementation of this. They stressed that this will step on people’s freedom of expression and would create privacy concerns.

In 5 days, millions will lose access to their SIMs. We call on those who are part of the disenfranchised, the people who registered for fear of losing access to their SIMs despite privacy concerns, and those who are simply unable to register for whatever reason, to demand reactivation and accountability from President Marcos himself,” Batara stressed.

The government said that SIM registration will fight against the growing of scamming incidents and spam messages.
