Elderly Farmer Finishes Senior High School at the Age of 72

An elderly farmer earns praise from the online community after he graduated from Senior High School at the age of 72.

A 72-year-old farmer, Carlos Saladaga, also known as Tatay Carlos or “ALO,” graduated from Daantabogon National High School. Tatay Carlos enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS) with 44 other students. He is a parent of one child and a grandfather of six from Muabog, Tabogon, Cebu.

Saladaga stated that he was chastised because of his age. He, on the other hand, did not let those words influence him because, among them, he is the one who wants to succeed, firm in completing his studies despite financial difficulties.

Saladaga claimed that he was the only one of his buddies who did not attend school. He stated that working would have been better for him if he had access to schooling.

“Sa una man gud, aduna ko’y mga barkada tapos sa among barkada ako ray wala ka eswela (I have peers before, and among them, I was the only one who didn’t go to school),” he said.

“Og usa sad naka realize ko nga sa akong pag panarbaho mas nindot og nakuy ineskwelahan (One thing I also realized while working is that it would have been better if I had access to education),” he added.

Tatay Carlos is a dedicated learner, according to Lymar Cueva, Saladaga’s former ALS instructor in junior high school. Cueva describes himself as a hardworking learner who is constantly willing to study and extend his knowledge.

He is always engaged in class activities, and if he is unsure about a topic, he never hesitates to inquire. Cueva also mentioned a conversation he had with Saladaga in which he asked Tatay Carlos why he goes to school despite his age.

Saladaga responded that he wanted to set a positive example by demonstrating that education is for everyone, regardless of age. He underlined that teens should concentrate on their academics because they are more capable than adults because they are still young and can work.

Saladaga wants to be an agriculturist. He emphasized that he wants to assist the heroes of the land who, like myself, are passionate about organic farming. He also stated that he was planting crops while studying in senior high school.

He is eager to begin college now that he has completed senior high school. However, he stated that it will still be dependent on their financial capacity.
