Miss Universe 2023: Transgender Model To Represent Netherlands In Pageant

Transgender Woman To Represent Netherlands In Miss Universe 2023

MISS UNIVERSE 2023 – A trans woman named Rikkie Valerie Kolle will compete in the Miss Universe pageant.

After Angela Ponce of Spain made history for trans visibility in 2018, another transgender woman will participate in the Miss Universe competition. On July 8 (July 9 in Manila), transgender model Rikkie Valerie Kolle was crowned Miss Nederland. She will represent the Western European country in the 72nd edition of the international pageant in El Salvador later this year.

The 22-year-old Kolle from Amsterdam defeated eight other contenders to take Ona Moody’s place as the next national champion. The title belongs to her as the first transgender woman.

After Kolle was crowned, the Miss Netherland pageant posted a comment from the jury report on Facebook. “The finalist shined throughout the show, and has also made the greatest progress along the way”

“She has an iron strong story with a clear mission. The jury is convinced that the organization will enjoy working with this young woman,” the national pageant organization continued in its FB post.

Ponce was the first transgender woman to successfully win a national title and advance to the international competition, even though the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) had let transgender people compete for more than ten years.

Jenna Talackova, a transgender model, made it to the Miss Universe Canada competition in 2012 and placed in the Top 20. Kataluna Enriquez, a Filipino-American transgender model, competed in the Miss USA pageant in 2021 after winning the Miss Nevada USA crown.

In a previous interview, Shamcey Supsup-Lee, the national director of Miss Universe Philippines, stated that she would accept transgender candidates for the national pageant “as long as they have legal documents to prove they are now female and they already underwent gender reassignment.”
