Jerry Gracio Airs Dismay to Makati PNP Recounting Their “Oplan X-Men” Following Awra Briguela Arrest
Kapamilya writer Jerry Gracio recounted the Makati Philippine National Police (PNP) “Oplan X-Men” following arrest of actor Awra Briguela.
Jerry Gracio, a Kapamilya Party-list nominee, responded to the arrest of a former child star after getting involved in a “rambulan” outside a Makati City pub on Twitter. Gracio expresses his dismay over Awra’s imprisonment during “Pride Month.”
“Ang masaklap, hinuli at pinosasan ng mga pulis si Awra habang nagdiriwang tayo ng Pride Month at kabi-kabila ang nakapaskil na Happy Pride tarp sa government offices,” he wrote.
He then described the Makati PNP’s “Oplan X-Men” and their history of transphobia. The “Oplan X-Men” is the claimed profiling of transgender women by the Makati police in order to safeguard them from “exploitation and human trafficking.”
“May history ng transphobia ang Makati PNP, three years ago, nagsagawa sila ng “Oplan X-men”,” he said.
He also urged Makati Mayor Abi Binay to defend the LGBTQI+ community. He regretted that the PNP’s actions in Awra’s case demonstrate the importance of legislators passing the SOGIE Bill in Congress. The SOGIE Equality Bill is a proposed law that criminalizes discrimination based on gender identity or expression.
“We appeal to Mayor Abi Binay to protect the LGBTQI+ community in Makati. Ang aksyon ng PNP sa kaso ni Awra ang patunay na kailangan na nating ipasá ang SOGIE Bill sa Kongreso,” Gracio said in the comment of his post.
