Indian Teenage Girl Wins 5-Day Dance Marathon
A 16-year-old teenage girl from India has recently made history in the field of dance by accomplishing a remarkable feat.
Srushti Sudhir Jagtap, a student, has been recognized by the Guinness World Records (GWR) for achieving the longest dance marathon by an individual, dancing continuously for nearly five days.
According to the GWR report, Srushti danced for 127 hours, earning her the prestigious title. To achieve this record, she underwent 15 months of training in Yoga Nidra, a form of dance, under the guidance of her grandfather.
As part of her training, she also performed two 126-hour dance marathons. Srushti’s dance marathon took place from May 29 to June 3, 2023, in their college auditorium, where her family and supporters were present to witness and encourage her throughout this historic journey.
Despite moments of fatigue, her parents stood by her side, constantly spraying water on her face to keep her refreshed. GWR Official Adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar commented, “Very impressive performance overall.”
In order to attain this record, Srushti had to perform a recognized dance style according to the GWR standards, ensuring that her feet moved in sync with the music at all times. She chose to showcase the Kathak dance style, one of India’s eight primary forms of classical dance.
“As per our guidelines for ‘longest marathon’ records, the participant is permitted a five-minute rest break for every continuous hour of activity. These rest breaks can be accumulated if not taken. They were the only times Srushti could sleep or use the bathroom during the attempt,” a GWR representative explained.
Srushti would take rest breaks during late hours, utilizing the time to sleep or engage in conversation with her parents to refresh her mind.
Finally, she succeeded in dancing continuously for five days and achieved the world record.
According to Srushti, she decided to break this world record because she aspired to represent India through the art of dance. “I feel proud that I could give this great achievement to our country,” she added.
Previously, the record for the longest dance marathon by an individual was held by Nepalese dancer Bandana Nepal, who danced for 126 hours in 2018.
