Joey de Leon on Eat Bulaga Title: 'Akalain nyong pag-aawayan'

Joey de Leon never imagined that the title of the noontime show he created would become an issue

Henyo Master Joey de Leon shared that after almost five decades, he did not imagine that there will be a fight over the Eat Bulaga title.

It is known to many that the title of the longest-running noontime show was created by Joey. The veteran comedian-host shared how he came up with the said title. Before EB, there was Student Canteen.

Joey shared that he was thinking about what is something being done in the canteen, and the word “eat” immediately came into his mind.

The Henyo Master was also the one who created the tagline “Hanggang may bata, may Eat Bulaga.” Just recently, a conflict happened as TAPE Inc, the producer of the noontime show claims that they have the right to use the title while Joey, along with Tito and Vic Sotto.

Previously, it was reported that TVJ might use the Eat Bulaga title for their new show on TV5. It was officially announced that the iconic trio, along with other Dabarkads signed with Manny V. Pangilinan’s Mediaquest.

In a recent Instagram post, Joey de Leon once again talked about the title that he created. He shared that when he suggested the title, although it was accepted by the management, it took a while before it settled in people’s minds and hearts.

“Noong maisip, binuo at imungkahi ko ang pangalang “EAT BULAGA!” para sa aming palabas nung 1979, naramdaman kong kahit ito ang napili at tinanggap ng marami sa namumuno, matagal-tagal ding ninamnam ito hanggang sa tumining; wari bang isang aampunin na may kaibang tunog at kaiba sa paningin,” he shared.

Joey added that it seemed that people have to learn to swallow it first before it became a natural thing.

However, after almost five decades, that title went controversial. “Aakalain ba nyong makalipas ang 44 na taon o halos LIMANG DEKADA, ang pangalang ito ay pag-aawayan, pag-aagawan at marami ang nais na umangkin?!” Joey de Leon said.
