Philippines Court Junks the Bail Petition of Former Senator Leila de Lima

A Philippines court has junked the bail petition of the former Senator Leila de Lima for her drug trafficking charges.

Former Senator Leila de Lima’s bail petition was denied by the Muntinlupa RTC Branch 256. It is only a few weeks after she was acquitted on the second of three drug trafficking accusations brought against her during the Duterte government.

He goes on to say that “there is a high probability that the crime charged was committed.” De Lima, an outspoken critic of former President Rodrigo Duterte and his brutal anti-drug campaign, has been detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center at Camp Crame in Quezon City since February 2017.

In response to De Lima’s petition for humanitarian concern, Buenaventura ruled her camp’s arguments were insufficient. The 63-year-old De Lima had cited health difficulties and her senior status in her bail appeal.

Buenaventura, on the other hand, stated that the former senator was “not suffering from any serious or life-threatening health condition.” The court also ignored De Lima’s trauma in October 2022, when one of three jailed militants kidnapped her as they attempted to flee the Camp Crame facility.

She escaped unharmed, while three alleged Abu Sayyaf terrorists were slain, based on the report. The dismissal of their appeal for his client’s interim freedom upset Atty Boni Tacardon.
