4 Alleged Sellers of SIM Cards with Verified E-Wallet Accounts Arrested by NBI
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested four (4) alleged sellers of SIM cards with verified e-wallet accounts.
In an entrapment operation, NBI investigators apprehended four alleged sellers of SIM cards with confirmed e-wallet accounts. According to NBI Cybercrime Division Chief Jeremy Lotoc, they were able to intercept the transaction between the vendor and the customer.
Based on the report, the NBI was able to track them down after the transaction,” Lotoc stated. According to the suspects, they were told to sell registered SIM cards online, but the verification was done by a member of a group chat.
According to the suspect, each SIM card costs P700 and 40 to 50 pieces are sold per day. Customers of registered SIM cards, according to Lotoc, include individuals involved in virtual casinos and online cockfighting (e-sabong) businesses, who can still access e-wallet accounts despite its security features.
Meanwhile, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Region 6 reminded consumers yet again that they still have 60 days to register their subscriber identity module (SIM). The SIM Registration Act, Republic Act (RA) 11934, will be implemented only until July 25, or the end of the 90-day extension granted by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
